Levi's stretch jeans, model number 612, probably from around the late 1960s. They have a slim silhouette and a gold thread Big E tab on a black background. They are made in the same way as the ones with the orange tab. It's interesting to know that fashion-conscious stretch jeans have been on the market for 50 years now.
Like the Levi's 606, the slim silhouette is easily recognizable in the photo and tapers from the thigh to the hem. However, the crotch is deeper, unlike most stretch slim jeans these days.
backpocket
Vertical back pockets with a deep arcuate stitch angle. The back of the back pocket is single stitched, although it is not shown in the photo.
top button (back)
It is hard to see because it is a little rusty, but it does not appear to have been stamped.
outseam
The left and right sides have been locked and then folded and stitched. The hem is singled, but it appears to be the same thread as the other stitches, so I suspect it is original.
fabric
The fabric is dyed in a very grayish color. Since it is dead stock, it has glue on it, but it does not feel as stiff as most denim fabrics. Since it is a mixed stretch fabric, sulfide dyes may have been used. There is almost no slub feeling, but there are some flaws in the weave. The stretch fabric stretches moderately vertically, but not so much horizontally.
