This is a Levi's 501 made in 1972, which is the transition period from BIG E to the early 66 model. This has a mixture of BIG E details such as the BIG E red tab and single-stitched outseam, and 66 early model details such as the fly button that is not foot-long"R", paper patch with care stamp, and slake stamp. It's difficult to determine whether the single-stitched outseam makes it a BIG E or the fact that the fly button is not a foot-long "R" makes it a 66 BIG E. In the first place, it may not be meaningful to distinguish between the two when the model is so transitional.
paper patch
The CARE stamp on the paper patch, a feature of the 66 model, can be seen, but the tear-off tag with a cut-out line is not attached. Also, "Made in U.S.A." is not on this one, although it is almost always found on 66 models, while some Big E models do not have it.
guarantee ticket
Some of the 502 BIG E's without the CARE stamp have "FOR OVER 110 YEARS" on them. But, this has "FOR OVER 100 YEARS".
sleek stamp
The number next to the English notation is hard to see, but since it appears to be "062 70," it is thought to have been made at Factory No.6 in July 1972. Also, there is a description of 8% shrinkage.
backpocket
Slightly vertical back pocket. The shape of the archite stitching is slightly irregular on both sides, similar to other Big E's.
top button (back)
Stamped with "6". Parallel stitching next to the top button, chain stitching on the waistband.
coin pocket
The fabric of the coin pocket is used vertically, and the fabric of the other side is used horizontally. The stitching on the back of the coin pocket is a chain stitch.
outseam, seslvedge
The color of the selvedge remains strong. Displacement of the hem seam is modest.
outseam
One of the ways to tell if this is a single stitch or chain stitch is to determine whether it is a Big E or a 66 model, but in this case it is a single stitch.
